Here is Microsoft's wrap of the event. Amazing new games, and lots of them, signal a great Christmas and New Year for Kiwi gamers Auckland, November 4, 2002 - Xbox has launched its extended Christmas line-up of video games that Microsoft says will add in the region of 70 new titles to the 80-odd available at launch date in early October. At X02, a major video games event at which more than 20 key titles were demonstrated, Xbox also made several key announcements and previewed some spectacular long-term blockbuster titles. An international contingent of Xbox techos, sales and marketing experts and representatives of third party publishers brought media up to date with the latest game 'early builds' and news about the platform. Xbox says around 70 new games will be launched in the coming weeks, taking the number available by Christmas to about 150, covering all games genres and for all ages. Three hundred more are currently in development, as more than 200 of the world's leading developers make full use of the capabilities and power of the Xbox system. "Gamers get more out of Xbox - more power, more excitement and more fantastic gaming experiences - and the games line-up shown at X02 demonstrates that difference beautifully," says Wilf Robinson, New Zealand marketing manager for Xbox. Some of the many highly-anticipated games from Microsoft Games Studios and third parties scheduled to arrive before the end of the year include: * MechAssault (Microsoft Game Studios): A third-person action/shooter, where environments are not only fully destructible, they're also weapons. Choose from a dozen BattleMech walking tanks ranging from quick 30- tonners to huge 100-ton beasts. Configure the 'Mech and optimise it to crush opponents. * Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Vivendi Universal): Following the storyline of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring, this third-person action/adventure with strong RPG element, enables you to play as part of the fellowship on a journey from the Shire to the River Audin. * Splinter Cell (Ubi Soft): Putting the gamer into the shoes of an anti-terrorist commando, Splinter Cell (recently named Game of the Show at ECTS 2002) features incredibly realistic environments and deep gameplay that pushes the Xbox hardware into new gaming directions. * Blinx (Microsoft Game Studios): Blinx is a cool, clever cat on a quest to recover time crystals and fix glitches in the space-time continuum. Blinx uniquely features time travel and gamers can actually alter the flow of time in the game, possible only with the Xbox built-in hard disc. * Toejam and Earl III: All Funked Up (Sega): Bringing a much-loved 16-bit franchise exclusively to Xbox, Toejam & Earl offers massive worlds to explore as the funky pair use "funk-fu" to battle their way on a quest for 12 sacred funk records - and all in glorious Dolby 5.1 sound. * Unreal Championship (Infogrames): Only on Xbox, Unreal Championship offers explosive gameplay, amazing graphics and System Link capability so that up to 16 players can play head to head. * SEGA GT 2002 (Sega): One of the most anticipated games on any console, Sega GT 2002 is only on Xbox and offers the definitive car racing simulation with more than 100 current and classic high-performance vehicles. Also on the list of eagerly-awaited games are two new Xbox-only games from Rare Ltd., the legendary video game developer just acquired by Microsoft: * Perfect Dark 2: Joanna Dark's back and she's only on Xbox. The sequel to the landmark Perfect Dark, Perfect Dark 2 will take full advantage of the power of Xbox to deliver an incredible gaming experience. * Kameo: Elements of Power: Rare's original role-playing adventure starring an all-new cast of characters in a lush new world, is coming exclusively to Xbox. During the next 12 to 24 months, gamers can expect five Rare titles in all the key genres - racing, shooters, platformers and more. "Fantastic games are coming to New Zealand in big numbers, and it's going to be an incredible Christmas if you own an Xbox," Wilf Robinson says. "With a great variety of games in a range of genres slated for New Zealand this Christmas, every gamer will be well catered for. No other console has ever accomplished these types of numbers this early into its launch period. "It's not just about quantity though, which we clearly have in abundance! Game quality is what really matters. "What makes the Xbox games special is that they all harness the unique features of the Xbox. They use the hard disc to enhance and extend playability; they use the Xbox graphics horsepower to create vivid worlds that are true to the developer's imagination; they use Dolby 5.1 surround sound for a more immersive game play experience. New year will be a landmark one for the games industry, with the quality and quantity of games coming to Xbox." The Xbox line-up features all the big franchises, with titles such as: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Harry Potter: Chamber of Secrets, Metal Gear Solid Substance, Tony Hawk, Medal of Honour, Spider-Man, James Bond 007: Nightfire, Colin McCrae Rally 3, Need for Speed and many others. "Every Xbox owner should be excited, not just because all of the big franchises will be available on Xbox - but because the cross-platform titles look and play best on Xbox," Robinson says. |
