Title : Republic: The Revolution PC Preview Date Added : 2003-03-16 02:09:09 Written By : Joshua Minchenko Your mission: to disintegrate the President’s popularity, and to take over the rule of Novistrana. Double-dealings, conspiracy and shifty promises, and this is only the beginning. Welcome to the political world of the fictional, former Soviet Republic. Elixir Studios have done everything in their power to make this game one of the best of it’s kind. Notably, the very first thing that you notice, is the graphics. A few years ago, four programmers were given the opportunity to take a sneak preview of what’s in-store. It blew them away. Their first comment: the speed precision of it’s powerful graphics engine. To play a game of Republic means to assign orders to very high, very secret, inner circle of associates who are waiting for your next command. Not only that, but you get to watch the dramatic outcome as it happens. The important thing to remember is that Republic gives you the traditional style resources, but you have to know the right person, at the right time and knowing how to influence them to make them into puppet, controlled by you, the puppeteer. Your career in Novistrana begins in the small, 10,000 populated town of Ekaterine. The very small group of supporters won’t take you very far, so othe object of this section of the game is to send out a research officer on recon missions to find out about the 15 other districts in your town. In doing this, you find out about your major political opponents and the people that hold a fair bit of power over certain people. Much of your attention will likely be focused on pulling off actions without being spotted, or else you might have to send a crew in the next turn to clean things up and silence the neighbors. Main characters will start out with two actions, and they can gain new ones or upgrade the ones they have as they increase in level. Most actions depend on having one of the game's three resources: wealth, influence, and force, which are acquired by controlling districts in the town. It's not impossible to recruit from beyond your core appeal, but to make that work you'll have to work crowds particularly well during speeches and take the time to ensure the loyalty of dubious henchmen. These are just some of the features of Republic. In fact, there are so many others, I could go on for hours. Republic: The New Revolution is definitely on my “to-buy” list. |
